The Secretary of Education's phone call to Studio School

On May 5th, the U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, made a phone call to our lead teacher and founder, Marca Whitten. He called during Teacher Appreciation Week to thank her for her service to the students and families of the Los Angeles Unified School District, and find out more about her motivation for writing The Studio School's pilot proposal. After Ms. Whitten caught her breath (she thought she was being asked to come and speak with an angry parent!), they also discussed the pressing need for re-envisioning the teaching profession to create more structured opportunities for teacher leadership.

In the wake of this amazing moment at Studio, we'd also like to announce that in the 2015-2016 school year, one-third of Studio teachers, including Marca Whitten, will have hybrid roles, where they are teaching half-time and doing leadership work the other half of their day. We hope that this is only the beginning of our work around creating more sustainable, innovative roles for our incredible teachers!
